PTA New VPN Registration Structure Permits Access to Users’ Browsing Information

The Pakistan Telecom Authority (PTA) has started the re-registration process for Virtual Private Network (VPN) service providers, presenting another class license system for data services. This drive intends to improve the regulation of VPN services across the country.
As per the new framework, VPN service providers are bound to apply for class licenses from the PTA, and for this, they should pay a charge going between Rs100,000 to Rs300,000 for getting each license. This is supposed to drive VPN providers to go under the guideline of the local laws on the protection of data.
One of the more significant results of this development is that the PTA is going to become capable of obtaining users’ data and browsing histories. This action is intended to reinforce cybersecurity efforts, empowering the authorities to monitor and respond to cyber threats more effectively.
The re-registration process also demands that VPN providers set up data centers in Pakistan hence ensuring compliance with the local laws and increased security of data protection.
Before the establishment of this decision, the PTA led interviews with different stakeholders, including the Pakistan Software Houses Association (P@SHA), to streamline the registration process of VPNs and facilitate legitimate users.
This drive mirrors the PTA’s obligation to further developing cybersecurity measures and ensuring the secure and regulated use of VPN services in Pakistan.
